The U.S. on Monday imposed sanctions on six individuals and an entity for their support and facilitation of the al-Rawi Financial Network, an Iraq-based Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS) facilitation group, according to the U.S. Treasury.
The al-Rawi Financial Network has supported “ISIS financial facilitation worldwide by employing common money laundering techniques such as cutouts, layering, and cash smuggling to obfuscate the source of illicit ISIS money,” according to the Treasury statement.
The U.S. and other governments have in recent years sanctioned components of the al-Rawi Financial Network, as well as conducted military and law enforcement operations.
